Global warming is an alarming sign of unbalancing the complete ecology of the Earth. The climatic conditions, the environmental disasters, the extinction of species, and many more issues will soon begin to exhibit adverse effects. Global warming is gradually marking its presence through various sources. Global warming statistics present the facts and trauma that our planet is going to face. Man made gases, the nitrogen oxide and chlorofluorocarbons, are also contributing to the atmosphere with what is known as greenhouse water vapor, carbon dioxide and methane. Carbon dioxide pollution from current transportation methods as well as industrial plants is one of the vital reasons for global warming. Deforestation is supplementing the already present threat of global warming. Owing to all these factors and more, the global temperatures have shown a very steady rise over the past hundred years. NASA states that 2005 was the hottest year to date in the U.S. and the annual temperatures are a great deal warmer than in 1900. The acceleration rate shows thrice the trend.
The carbon dioxide emissions are causing a serious threat to the environment. The increased in this gas has augmented the intensity of hurricanes and tropical storms since the 1970s. Atmospheric carbon dioxide shows an 18% increase during the periods from 1800 to 2000. This accounts for 367 parts per million compared to 280 per million. Scientists strongly believe that the carbon dioxide levels may go to 970 parts per million by 2100.
The year 2005 cost $100 billion for U.S. coast alone; owing to hurricane damage. This severity is mainly due to carbon dioxide emissions. As the average temperature is on the rise, the snow and ice covered regions have diminished over the past years. As per US Geological survey, by 2030 Glacier national parks will be left without glaciers. The arctic sea ice has also melted nearly 400,000 square miles of ice which is intimidating the polar bear habitations. In all proximity, the arctic sea ice was once identical to the Texas state size and today it is a past history. The fact emphasizing this loss is that the damage may turn out to be much more severe. The sea levels have risen dramatically due mainly to the melting of polar glaciers. This will have devastating consequences for many current coastal communities. High tides can cause more erosion and reduction of glaciers reduces the fresh water availability on the planet. This will lead to total loss of 15-37% of plants and animals by way of species extinction. The U.S. is the highest contributor of the nation’s emissions directly or indirectly. They contribute 25% even though they make up only 5% of the world’s population. This is evidence that the U.S. government must work in controlling global warming.
If we can manage to take heed to the message that the Earth is trying to send us, maybe it would be possible to reverse this damaging trend; at the very least, we could try to preserve what we have left.
